Colour Perceptions

During the Friday drawing lessons its been all about colour. One particular task was about colour perceptions and how we all think about colour in different ways. I had to paint out the colour of what springs to mind when each word/phrase was said. For instance 'oval room blue' could be thousands of different blues. I painted theses with Windsor & Newton Gouache paints as they give a great flat colour when mixed with the right amount of water.

First colour pallet

My first colour pallet came from my images I first took from around the city. A lot of my images were of buildings but at this point I don't want to pick out colours of stone and bricks. I studied my images and picked out the colours that really jumped out at me. They are not bright colours as I don't want my colour pallet to be to 'in your face' I feel these colours are quite subtle and I can pick out yarns that symbolises the colours and also the original image as I don't want to use fluffy yarns when the images have strong and defined lines.

Textile World - Knit

I've never knitted before and was abit apprehensive at first and didn't know what to expect. After the demonstration on the knit machine and a few errors I soon got the hang of it. Here's few examples of my first attempt at knitting on the machines.

Make a drawing using indian ink and differenty sized brushes

From one of the pictures I took from the city I did a reinterpretation of the graffiti on the wall. I love working with ink as you can get so many diverse marks with a variety of drawing tools. I layered some of the black Indian ink up to see the different depths I could get and what effect it had on the paper.

Make a paper cut drawing

This is a view from my bedroom in Manchester. I thought this would be particularly good to do a cut drawing from as the skyline is great. Each building is unique and has a special quality to it.

Make a drawing using 5 different pencils

I was given a few objects to draw from and this particular item caught my eye. They were little pots with a brightly coloured pattern on them. I interpreted the surface pattern by doing 5 continuous line drawings in the colours from them pots. Instead of 5 different sized pencils I used 5 different coloured pencils as I prefer working with colour.

Make a drawing using dust

Here I did a cut drawing of a Marc Jacobs perfume bottle then used that as a stencil. I then took a craft knife and chipped away at a graphite stick/ pastels and charcoal to make tiny shavings around the edge of my stencil. Using my finger I then rubbed the assorted media into the paper in different directions to see what effect if gave.

Make a drawing that fills 5% or 25% or 85% of your paper

I decided to start with an A2 size paper and sketch my alarm clock. It approximately fills 25% of my paper. I used a standard HB pencil for this particular task as I didn't want to add any more media to a simple sketch.

Here is a snippet of a few pictures I took from in and around Manchester. These helped with the initial drawings and research for the start of the 'Origins' brief.

Bloom - Induction Week

For the first week we were put into several group and given a mini induction brief to create experimental 'stuff' relating to the word BLOOM. After being handed hundreds of red leaflets we then arranged then on white paper to make a sort of 2D/ 3D piece of work which was situated in the new art and design building. This was a great task to get us all working together and working on something that was individual pieces of work which then became a collaborate structure.
